"Three winning streak" of the latest general standard for circuit board design
As the chip size continues to shrink and the system functional characteristics continue to expand, it becomes increasingly difficult for designers to remember the layout parameters and specification requirements of the circuit board. The newly revised IPC-2221B General Standard for Printed Circuit Board Design covers various requirements in the design of various types of printed circuit boards, such as testing, through hole protection, test board design, PCB surface treatment, etc.
John Perry, the technical project manager of IPC, said, "The newly revised standards can help designers choose the way of surface treatment. The newly expanded data charts make it very convenient to query various surface treatment parameters."
The update of electrical testing in the new standard reflects the industry's emphasis on product quality and reliability. Perry said, "The newly added content in electrical testing introduces test methods such as continuity test, high voltage test and impedance test. In general, one test method cannot meet all the test requirements. I hope designers have the courage to choose two or three test methods to meet customer requirements.
As the number of through-hole on the circuit board increases, through-hole protection becomes particularly important, and IPC-2221B also adds this aspect. Another important part updated in this standard is the acceptability and regular consistency test of test boards in Appendix A. Its performance indicators are in accordance with the qualification and performance specifications of IPC-6012C rigid printed boards and IPC-6013C flexible printed boards.
For example, AB/R test plates used for metal through-hole evaluation and thermal stress testing have been designed to include blind hole, buried hole and micro through-hole structures. The design of AB/R test board and the other 8 test boards in Appendix A is a breakthrough improvement on the IPC-2221 test board launched 23 years ago.
The release of IPC-2221B marks the completion of three important standards for PCB design. Perry said: "We have created a miracle of three wins in a row - the IPC-2222A rigid organic printed board design sub standard was launched two years ago, and the IPC-2223C flexible printed board design sub standard was released one year ago. The release of IPC-2221B marks that all the IPC-2220 series design standards have been updated." The Circuit board manufacturer will explain the "three wins" of the latest general standard for circuit board design.
